Apple brings 2nm processing power to the base MacBook Pro

Apple has officially refreshed its entry level 14 inch MacBook Pro, integrating the newly minted M6 chip into the lineup. This move follows the pattern set by previous yearly iterations where the hardware remains largely untouched while the internal silicon receives a significant boost. While the chassis, port selection, and high quality Liquid Retina XDR display remain identical to last year’s model, the heart of the machine has evolved significantly.

The star of the show is the M6 processor, marking Apples first foray into 2 nanometer chip architecture. By expanding to a 12 core CPU from the previous ten, Apple claims users will see a jump in multithreaded performance of about twenty percent over its predecessor. To keep pace with the growing demand for artificial intelligence, the chip now sports a dual 16 core Neural Engine alongside an upgraded GPU featuring dedicated accelerators in every core, all while maintaining better power efficiency for longer battery life.

Beyond raw speed, this year’s update finally bridges a gap in connectivity options. The base model now includes Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 via the N1 wireless networking chip, features that were previously reserved for those spending more on Pro or Max configurations. Everything else stays familiar for professionals and students alike, including three Thunderbolt 4 ports, a MagSafe charger, and a helpful SDXC card slot for photographers moving files from their cameras.

Starting prices hold steady at $1,999 for the configuration with 16GB of memory and 1TB of storage. However, prospective buyers should be prepared for higher costs if they want more room on their drives; due to ongoing global memory shortages, upgrading to a 4TB SSD now commands a premium of $1,500. Customers can place preorders starting October 28th, with units expected to ship beginning November 6th.
